How to pay Zakat al Fitr - Step by Step

Step 1

What is Zakat al Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr, also known as Fitrana in Urdu, is a form of charity given by Muslims at the end of Ramadan before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It specifically serves to purify those who fast from any indecent act or speech and in addition,to help the destitute and the needy.

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, obligated Zakat al-Fitr as a purification for the fasting person from vain talk and misbehaviour and as food for the needy. Whoever pays it before the Eid prayer, it is accepted as Zakat. Whoever pays it after the Eid prayer, it is considered as a voluntary charity (sadaqah).

Step 2

What amount is required for Zakat al Fitr in 2026?

Scholars typically set the amount as a specific quantity of staple food (like wheat, barley, dates, or rice) or its equivalent monetary value.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) set it at one “saa’ ” (an ancient measure) of these foods. Consequently, this usually translates to about 2.5 to 3 kilograms (5 to 7 pounds) of food per person.

Step 3

Who is responsible?

When determining who should pay Fitrana in 2026, remember that the head of the household pays on behalf of themselves and their dependents, including children, older people, and anyone else in their care. In other words, the full obligation rests with the head of the household, regardless of the number of dependents.

Step 4

Zakat al Fitr Formula in 2026

Number of people in the household × 2.5kg (or 3kg)

Step 5

For example, consider a household of 2 adults and 2 children — that is, 4 people in total:

4 × 2.5 kg = 10 kg

Therefore, this household owes 10 kg of staple food.
However, the final cost will depend on which staple food the family chooses to give.

Step 6

What if I can’t drop it off to your centre?

If you’re unable to drop off your food packages directly to our centre, you may transfer the equivalent cash amount to our bank account instead. We will then purchase the food on your behalf one or two days before Eid
Formula:
ZF = Number of people in the household × 2.5kg x cost of the product in the local supermarket.

Step 7

Why Paying Zakat al Fitr Early Matters

We must pay Fitrana before the Eid prayer, so that needy families can benefit from it on the day of Eid. Ultimately, we can start the distribution from the 28th of the month of Ramadhan.
