How to pay Zakat al Fitr - Step by Step

Step 1

What is Zakat al Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr, also known as Fitrana in Urdu, is a form of charity given by Muslims at the end of Ramadan before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It specifically serves to purify those who fast from any indecent act or speech and to help the poor and needy.

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, obligated Zakat al-Fitr as a purification for the fasting person from vain talk and misbehaviour and as food for the poor. Whoever pays it before the Eid prayer, it is accepted as Zakat. Whoever pays it after the Eid prayer, it is considered as a voluntary charity (sadaqah).

Step 2

How to determine the amount we need to pay?

Scholars typically set the amount as a specific quantity of staple food (like wheat, barley, dates, or rice) or its equivalent monetary value. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) set it at one “saa’ ” (an ancient measure) of these foods. Consequently, this usually translates to about 2.5 to 3 kilograms (5 to 7 pounds) of food per person.

Step 3

Who Should Pay?

The head of the household pays on behalf of themselves and their dependents, including children, the elderly, and any other dependents in their care. In essence, it is a responsibility carried by the head of the household.

Step 5

Example

For a family of 2 adults and 2kids = 4 people x 2.5kg=
ZF would amount to 10kg for this household. However, how much will this cost them? It depends on the type of staple food they wish to purchase.

Step 6

What if I can’t drop off the food to your centre?

You can transfer the value into our bank account so that we can purchase the food items on your behalf one day or two before Eid.
Formula:
Total ZF = Number of people in the household × 2.5kg x cost of the product in the local supermarket.

Step 7

Pay Before Eid

We must pay Zakat al Fitr before the Eid prayer, so that the poor and needy can benefit from it on the day of Eid. Therefore, it can be paid before the Eid prayer on the day of Eid or any other time from the 28th of the month of Ramadhan.
